This Week at Norton’s Cove Café

Another wrench thrown in… back to alert level 4 for the Greater Norton’s Cove area.

I’ve been thinking about what we should do as a business these last couple of days, and have come to the conclusion that we will go ahead with our planned start dates. If we are still in Alert Level 4 next Wednesday (reopening day), then we we will open for take-out only. If you have a reservation for the first week, I’ll be in contact closer to the reservation day to let you know what’s on the go.

Work on the Lower Deck is still progressing, if slowly, and the space will double our usual floorspace when we reopen for in-person dining. I just spent one of my days off painting doors and trims, and I’ll be spending a few of my evenings after work at the studio over there finishing that work. We still have to install bathroom fixtures, a track lighting unit (to illuminate Live @ Norton’s Cove performers), install floor covering on the stairs, remove all the tools (oh dear, we need another shed!), and furnish the space.

As an NLOWE member, I am very pleased to welcome NLOWE advisors Lindsay Mercer and Betsy Saunders to the Lower Deck @ Norton’s Cove Café right here in New-Wes-Valley!

Illustrations Update

So I didn’t make my self-imposed deadline. I still have three panels that need more layers- I’m currently waiting for them to dry so I can add on top without the colours mixing. And I have one panel that I loathe and I will rework.

But I still want to start Printapalooza on Wednesday, and I want to take Monday and Tuesday off to do some garden work and reading. I also start a little business program on Wednesday evening. And I have a bit of work to do getting the Lower Deck ready to open. These will have to get finished when I get time in the evenings. Soon!

twelve of sixteen panels complete (I think): or 75%+

This Week at Norton’s Cove Studio

I am on a self-imposed schedule to get these illustrations completed before #printapalooza is set to start again on May 19th. And I’ve been keeping to a regular work schedule for the first time after 19 years in business, taking two days off each week. So that means that I have 3 days left to get this project complete or suffer the consequences: personal shame and a rather nasty inner monologue.

You might see my lights on and my open sign up later than usual for the next couple of days! Please do stop in for a visit while I’m painting.

Just three more weeks before I can walk across Main Street for my cappuccino each morning! I’m so looking forward to our 5th season at Norton’s Cove Café! I’m really missing Ted’s seafood linguine, and Amanda’s orange partridgeberry muffins! How about you? What do you miss most when Norton’s Cove Café is closed?

mmmm… one of my all time faves!

And at the Lower Deck, the floor is finished! Yay! This project is coming along quite nicely, and we should be ready to open in June when the Café reopens for the season.

This Week at Norton’s Cove Café

We’ve been making little bits of progress with our Lower Deck project- The washroom walls are installed and painted, and we’re ready to lay flooring. We’re removing our tools and equipment, to be ready to install fixtures and furniture as soon as the flooring is complete. New pictures coming soon!

The Café Gift-Shop is open by appointment, and we’re now taking reservations for Mother’s Day Brunch on May 9th! We reopen the Café for our regular hours on June 2nd. ‘Ask Janet’ for reservations!

This Week at Norton’s Cove Café

Lockdown continues at Norton’s Cove, with the province at the highest level in the COVID-19 Alert Level System. I am working away as usual at the studio & café, as I always do during the winter months. In January, while we were open to the public, I had 6 visitors in store- so no great loss for me by not having to shovel the front steps! I am thankful every day for how lucky I am to be able to continue on with life as usual while others are really struggling with loneliness and fear of contracting the awful disease. I feel very privileged.

We’re still working away at the Lower Deck, and I took this picture on Saturday while upstairs for a coffee break. I’m so impressed with the way Norton’s Cove Café turned out- so many craftspeople are involved to create this kind of space, from my own inspiration and choices in fixtures, to the designer’s expertise, the carpenter’s skills, the furniture makers, the upholsterers, not to mention actually running the place as a business! It has been a lot of hard work and a sharp learning curve for me to be the owner of a restaurant, but I feel like all that is paying off and I think that Team Norton’s Cove has created one of the best restaurants in the province. It’s certainly my favourite!

Did you know that many of the Café Gift-shop’s products are available through our online shop? During this lockdown period, and always, you can pick up your jams and relish and thump mats at the studio- contactless- or have them delivered to you via Canada Post.

Lockdown

Well, here we are again! No Feast of Saint Valentine for us! Norton’s Cove Café is closed until Dr. Fitzgerald tells us it’s safe to reopen. (What an amazing job that woman is doing! Incredible patience!) I am still at work though, as usual, and the online shop is open 24-7! We ship everywhere via Canada Post or FedEx.

I’ve got it pretty good- I’ve got my little bubble of four to keep me company, my studio workspace is not compromised by the lockdown, and neither is my Lower Deck project, I suspect. So, onward with the winter’s work! I hope you all have lots of positives to think of in crazy times like these.

Lower Deck Update: look at how great the beams look with a bit of watered down paint smeared on!

The Lower Deck

Friday & Saturday saw the wall & ceiling paint complete, the bolts for the beams put in place, and a start to the painting of the beams. Big thanks go out to Taylor, Duke, and Fred for their volunteer time this week! ♡
