Studio Update

Smudge Herring: Just Keep Swimming is already swimming out the door to adorn new walls! The edition of 25 + 3 Trial Proofs and 1 Bon a Tirér are matted and available in the online shop. The weather has been too grey to take their picture since finishing them up- as soon as I see the sun, there will be new pictures on the website!

Smudge Herring: Just Keep Swimming on the press.

My trusty Studio Assistant, Taylor, and I are in the midst of #printapalooza again- printing cards, mini-prints, and bookmarks in our regular line-up of colours and designs. So far, we’ve finished red, red-blue, and we’re back in black today. We’d love for you to stop by to show you a little printmaking in action!

#printapalooza is what I call a big print run of Norton’s Cove Cards, Mini-Prints, and Bookmarks in each of the standard colours (red, red-yellow, orange, red-blue, blue, blue-green, green, black, and grey) and all the 30-something different designs! We’ll be printing a thousand or so pieces in the next couple of weeks!

Norton’s Cove Studio is open
10am – 6pm Wednesday through Saturday
10am – 3pm Sunday

The online shop is open 24/7 of course,
and you can choose to have your items shipped to you,
or you can ‘pick-up in-store’

This Week at Norton’s Cove Studio

Work-in-progress: this Smudge Herring lino-cut plate was started last year, and was put aside to make space for other work. I started working on this again yesterday, and am happy with how it’s looking so far- see next image…
I’m planning to print these fishies a couple of different ways- as a regular edition of prints, but also as an installation piece (printed on silk panels) for a gallery exhibit that I am going to propose called UNDERNEATH.

I finally finished my #printapalooza printing sessions this week, and already I am running low on some colours/designs with the increase in traffic that I’m starting to see here at the studio. So that means that a new print-run will be starting again soon! And I’ve made a little change to my cards this year: I have a new stamp for the backs which I think looks much better than the sticker and is more environmentally friendly. So the next time you see a Norton’s Cove Card, flip it to check the back!

This Week at Norton’s Cove Studio

On the morning of July 1st, we remember all those who have worked so hard to make this world a better place. And on Canada Day, I am thankful to have been born in a country where we have the right to keep on fighting for the rights of us all, and to keep making things better with each generation.

Rope Mats by Duke, starting at just $25, and half of the proceeds will be donated to IBEC to help fund their beach clean-ups in the area!

Duke will be showing visitors how to make his popular thump mats from reused ropes found on our beautiful shores. Stop by the studio from 2-4 today to make your own rope mat! This event is free and for all ages. Feel free to bring your own rope, or use ours!

I am still packaging Norton’s Cove Cards, Mini-Prints, and Bookmarks to fill my shelves and a few orders going out around the province. That means I have lots of time to chat with visitors while I’m scoring, folding, stamping logos, stuffing envelopes, and water-colouring the printed images! Do drop in for a visit.

Saturday Night at the Studio

There’s a whole lotta watercolouring goin’ on!

Still heavy on Norton’s Cove Cards, Mini-Prints, and Bookmarks production here at Norton’s Cove Studio. I’ve got most of my #printapalooza packaging done and the new products are in the shelves and on their way to other retail venues in the province, but I still have a big pile of prints waiting for watercolour to be added. One of my favourite jobs.

This Week at Norton’s Cove Studio

Hot off the press: These lino-cut relief prints will be scored, folded, a writing liner paper and an envelope inserted to become Norton’s Cove Cards.

So far in 2021, we have printed 156 bookmarks, 1,318 cards, and 857 mini-prints. And I know that it won’t be long after I get this batch packaged that I’ll have to start #printapalooza all over again, as I am already running low on some images & colours again. Which design is your favourite?

Victoria Day Weekend at Norton’s Cove Studio

Welcome to Norton’s Cove! While I have had many disappointed callers looking to make reservations at the Café (which opens for the season on June 2nd), you will find Norton’s Cove Studio open and actively printing new cards, mini-prints, and bookmarks this weekend!

Come on in for a visit while you #TourTheShore on Victoria Day Weekend!

#Printapalooza begins with a count of my inventory against my orders to fill and shop stock required, and that information gets me this print list:

The second step is to cut the required paper. I use this nice paper cutter to slice my 22×30″ sheets of 250g cotton fibre paper into the right sizes for cards, minis, and bookmarks. There is a tiny sliver left-over, which goes into storage for paper-making projects later on.

The next step is rolling out ink and printing all designs in a range of colours on my Praga etching press. Watch for more #Printapalooza progress shots as the week continues! And if you’re in the area, please stop in for a visit- we’d love to see you.

Norton’s Cove Studio is now open
10am – 6pm Wednesday through Saturday
10am – 3pm Sunday

The online shop is open 24/7 of course,
and you can choose to have your items shipped to you,
or you can ‘pick-up in-store’.

Order online for pick-up with the subscribers’ special discount code MAY2021 to save yourself 20% off on all Norton’s Cove Apparel! Or shop in store and get the same discount! That’s on all apparel, even the tee shirts that are on sale for $10 already! This will be the last sale until the Anniversary Sale in September.

Blue

Printapalooza starts the new week with blue.

I’ve been listening to a podcast made just for retailers while going about my physical work cutting paper and printing and the like, and I’ve been really focused on planning for my business to grow this year like never before. Really spending a lot of time fine tuning things like work schedules, hours of operation, how to keep employees happy (including this CEO) and away from burnout. Every year I learn a bit more by reading and listening and making all the mistakes I can. Listening to this podcast, Creative Shop Talk with Wendy Batten, is kind of reaffirming much of what I already know, but really convincing me that I CAN have a successful business if I just apply all these things I’ve picked up over the years, really building on my self-confidence like I’ve never felt before.

One of those things that I’m very slow to learn is that I need to take better care of myself. In the past, I have let myself get so burnt out I didn’t think life was worth living. Then even when I thought I was doing really great personally last year, instead of taking the time off that I needed to deal with the death of one of my best friends, I worked myself into a panic attack, ruining an event for myself that I had looked forward to for weeks.

So… after 19 years of doing it all wrong, I’m going to correct myself. I’ve decided that while the Café will have the same hours as last year, my studio will change to match the Café, giving me two days a week when I can destress, enjoy the summer weather, sail, visit with friends, garden, just sit on the deck, and keep myself energized all through the busy season. 🤞

Back in Black

Printing black cards, mini-prints, and bookmarks took two days, as there was a power outage on the 2nd day of #printapalooza, and while I did get some printing done in daylight, after a couple of hours without heat I could feel a chill creeping in, so I went home and parked myself next to the wood burning fireplace in my kitchen. Toasty…

Did you know that it takes about 3 seconds to make a perfect piece of toast by holding a piece of buttered bread inside the wood-stove on a big steel fork? 😋
