This Weekend at Norton’s Cove

It’s a beautiful day here in Norton’s Cove. Some very small bits of ice ice floating around in the cove, the sun is shining into the studio, and it’s not blowing a storm (oddly!). Because my other job gives me today off (stat holiday), I can go ahead and get some work done here in my natural habitat! I’d love to see you if you’re out and about- drop in with the family to see printmaking in action in a c.1890 heritage building! I’ll be printing all afternoon, as printapalooza restarts today. Printapalooza is what I call doing an entire print run: all designs in all colour options, as needed, usually more than a thousand prints.

We have new necklaces and wine charms in stock from Karlande Designs of Clarenville. Andrea Sharpe makes lovely pieces from sea-glass found on our shores and sterling silver. Each piece is gift-boxed with care instructions, and even includes a sticker! You’ll find them here in-store only.

This coming week, I’ll be celebrating my 20th business anniversary! Norton’s Cove Studio Inc. was incorporated on April 19th, 2002, and I’m happy that I’m still in business. The struggles are not over, far from it, but I count my blessings in this life I have here in my beautiful hometown every day. I understand how privileged I am to own my own home (which now boasts a hot-tub & sun-room! I’m so impressed we could make that happen! Thank you Duke!) and to be able to offer something special here to visitors and locals alike. I’m very proud of what my Team Norton’s Cove and all our supporters have accomplished. And so, on that day, I’m offering a sale in the online shop to subscribers to my eNewsletter (subscribe here): 40% off all my cards, mini-prints, limited edition prints, one-of-a-kind pieces, and Norton’s Cove Apparel. Enter the discount code TWENTY at the checkout. The sale will be online only, with orders delivered by Canada Post, or picked up in-store on Saturdays or by appointment.

The Café is now taking reservations for Mother’s Day Brunch! Contact me via e-mail or text or at the studio on Saturdays to reserve your table.

This Weekend at Norton’s Cove

I’m happy to be in my studio today (10am-6pm) getting things sorted to start #printapalooza again. Even though the shop is closed for most of the week, there is still lots happening in the background. Duke has been making thump mats and wreaths so that we are well stocked for the busy summer season. I’ve ordered some new beautiful things from other artisans, and I’m getting my print-list ready to start printing today.

Our first icebergs have been here all week, peeking out of the fog, and now we have pack-ice coming quite close to shore too. There’s quite a large iceberg near Wesleyville, easily visible as you’re walking/driving down the road. And of course, with all that ice around, it’s time to remember to watch for big moving white things- polar bears like to hitch a ride on that ice, and while we don’t see them here very often, it is something to keep in mind this time of year while out hiking with the dog!

Hope to see you soon!

This Weekend at Norton’s Cove Studio

Open Studio Saturday is on Sunday this weekend! Yesterday, the weather was pretty messy, and I thought today would be a better day to spend in the studio, with some Sunday drivers stopping in to visit. I’m here 10am-6pm, getting ready for next weekend’s Craft & Gift show in St. John’s (so the studio will be closed next weekend).

As you may already know, I am working away from Norton’s Cove for a few weeks Monday to Friday on a special project with the Town of New-Wes-Valley, so the studio is open just on Saturdays until May. I also come in sometimes from about 4-6pm, and Duke has been spending some time here making rope mats during the week, so please do drop in whenever you see the open sign!

This Week at Norton’s Cove Studio

Norton’s Cove Studio is open today 10-6! I’d love to see you if you’re out and about on this beautiful sunny March day. You can come just to see the printmaking process in action, browse the shop, enjoy an Americano, or work on your own artistic project! Everyone is welcome.

A word about masks: I am leaving this up to customers. While I’ll continue to wear a mask for now, I expect each customer/visitor to make up their own minds about how careful you want to be about catching any viruses.

Excursions

We went for a hike out behind our house yesterday. The landscape is barren and striking, and I think the huge blobs of granite that make up most of the landscape are simply gorgeous with our recent dusting of snow. What do you think?

Today I’m doing a few chores at home and at work, including printing up a few cards to complete an online order…

The studio is in a bit of chaos while I’m counting cards and picking out some older stock to add to our 50% discount table. I’ve also got several new canvases painted with background colours to become the next few Smudge Herring pieces. I’d like to get to #100 in the smudge herring series-seems like it’s a good number. The door you see leaning on the steel pole used to lead to the pantry in our home which we removed years ago and has just been taken out of storage. I’m looking for a good place to reuse it.

Studio & Café Update

25% off almost everything in the shop!

The studio/shop will be open on Wednesday, December 22nd from 10am to 6pm for your Christmas shopping needs- I’d love to see you here, or help you out with your online shopping experience! In the meantime, the online shop is open 24-7!

Christmas Parade

Who knew that being a part of a Christmas Parade could be so much fun? Waving at people for a couple of hours and yelling “merry Christmas” out the window of the FJ Cruiser made us feel so ridiculously happy!

Fred’s vehicle, a Toyota FJ Cruiser, with our Christmas tree on top and the back tire made into a Christmas wreath. This is Norton’s Cove’s 1st ever Christmas Parade float, and I hope there will be many more to come! Of course, you’ll notice that this design is in keeping with Norton’s Cove Studio’s 2021 Christmas Cruiser card.

Studio Update

Smudge Herring: Just Keep Swimming is already swimming out the door to adorn new walls! The edition of 25 + 3 Trial Proofs and 1 Bon a Tirér are matted and available in the online shop. The weather has been too grey to take their picture since finishing them up- as soon as I see the sun, there will be new pictures on the website!

Smudge Herring: Just Keep Swimming on the press.

My trusty Studio Assistant, Taylor, and I are in the midst of #printapalooza again- printing cards, mini-prints, and bookmarks in our regular line-up of colours and designs. So far, we’ve finished red, red-blue, and we’re back in black today. We’d love for you to stop by to show you a little printmaking in action!

#printapalooza is what I call a big print run of Norton’s Cove Cards, Mini-Prints, and Bookmarks in each of the standard colours (red, red-yellow, orange, red-blue, blue, blue-green, green, black, and grey) and all the 30-something different designs! We’ll be printing a thousand or so pieces in the next couple of weeks!

Norton’s Cove Studio is open
10am – 6pm Wednesday through Saturday
10am – 3pm Sunday

The online shop is open 24/7 of course,
and you can choose to have your items shipped to you,
or you can ‘pick-up in-store’

This Week at Norton’s Cove Studio

Work-in-progress: this Smudge Herring lino-cut plate was started last year, and was put aside to make space for other work. I started working on this again yesterday, and am happy with how it’s looking so far- see next image…
I’m planning to print these fishies a couple of different ways- as a regular edition of prints, but also as an installation piece (printed on silk panels) for a gallery exhibit that I am going to propose called UNDERNEATH.

I finally finished my #printapalooza printing sessions this week, and already I am running low on some colours/designs with the increase in traffic that I’m starting to see here at the studio. So that means that a new print-run will be starting again soon! And I’ve made a little change to my cards this year: I have a new stamp for the backs which I think looks much better than the sticker and is more environmentally friendly. So the next time you see a Norton’s Cove Card, flip it to check the back!

This Week at Norton’s Cove Studio

On the morning of July 1st, we remember all those who have worked so hard to make this world a better place. And on Canada Day, I am thankful to have been born in a country where we have the right to keep on fighting for the rights of us all, and to keep making things better with each generation.

Rope Mats by Duke, starting at just $25, and half of the proceeds will be donated to IBEC to help fund their beach clean-ups in the area!

Duke will be showing visitors how to make his popular thump mats from reused ropes found on our beautiful shores. Stop by the studio from 2-4 today to make your own rope mat! This event is free and for all ages. Feel free to bring your own rope, or use ours!

I am still packaging Norton’s Cove Cards, Mini-Prints, and Bookmarks to fill my shelves and a few orders going out around the province. That means I have lots of time to chat with visitors while I’m scoring, folding, stamping logos, stuffing envelopes, and water-colouring the printed images! Do drop in for a visit.
