In on the Gander

We had an appointment in Gander today for a recall concerning faulty headlights on our vehicle. So after dropping off the truck, we had a couple of hours to kill.

I had heard that some interesting improvements had been made at the Gander airport, where I haven’t been for quite some years, and Duke was willing, so we went for a visit.

This is the new giftshop, Gander Goods, at the airport. What a beautiful shop!
The Gander Goods store has a ton of fine craft and wonderful things made right here in Newfoundland, including my cards and minis! I absolutely love the design of the store- very bright and appealing, with lovely friendly staff too!
This is the International lounge at the airport, which had always been closed to the general public. It is now open, with a welcoming entryway, museum displays of relics from the history of the airport, an era appropriate playlist, and a bar. I am thoroughly impressed! Hats off to whoever is behind the refurbishment of YQX.

Café closing very soon!

Get it while you still can! Our wonderful Norton’s Cove Café is scheduled to close on the 17th of this month, and we’re seeing such slow days this week that we may need to close up a bit earlier. If you’re hoping to visit, please make your reservations now so that we’ll know what to expect and help us to make decisions about how to handle the next few days. Call 536-2633.

Our Head Chef at Norton’s Cove Café, Ted O’Connor, makes an amazing Stuffed Pork. Full of flavour and creaminess, I love it best with mashed potatoes and sautéed vegetables, as shown here. It’s one of our best filling comfort foods on the regular supper menu! You can order it with rice instead of potato, and there is an new option of a Moroccan inspired chickpea salad in lieu of the vegetables.

This week at Norton’s Cove Studio & Café

Thank you to those of you who came out for our Tibb’s Eve Dinner, even though we had to trim the event of its normal dance and performance by my brother Mick. My Norton’s Cove staff did a terrific job of feeding & watering us (yes, I got to enjoy the meal instead of serving it!), and I’m happy that we didn’t cancel the whole darn thing. It was a lovely & safe evening out with friends and family. Fingers crossed that next year will be back to normal!

My next biggest jobs are in the office. Planning out the whole new year ahead of us will take some reviewing of last year, lots of notes and charts and coffee drunk. I’m looking forward to it! I made a lot of mistakes this year, I think, and I want to make sure that I don’t make them all again next year. Timing is everything! And then there’s the year end financial documents that need to be filed with the government. Sounds awful, but in fact, I rather like doing that work each year.

I’ll be in and out of the studio and office at no set hours for the next few days, but will start with regular hours again after Old Christmas Day. Until then, I hope you’re enjoying the twelve days of Christmas, and that you don’t have a house full of calling birds, French hens, turtle-doves and partridges. I guess the golden rings might be alright! xo

Just A Card Indie Week Starts Tomorrow

This campaign has been taking place for a few years now, and I am very happy to participate. The founders of the Just a Card campaign are in England, and were interested in promoting shopping in small independently owned stores after seeing a favourite shop close. There was a sign on the door of a gallery that told folks that if they had bought just a card, perhaps the store would still be open. As a small business owner, this notion strikes hard and true. There are thousands of people in my hometown who have never made a purchase in my shop, or go years without purchases, and I have gone years without a salary. It is only because I am too stubborn to quit that I am still operating my studio after almost 20 years. I do realize that I am offering products that many local people do not need nor want. But I’m sure most people buy at least one greeting card a year, and it would make a huge difference to my business if I could sell an average of one card a year to everyone in town.

So don’t think that your small purchase at any of your local shops isn’t making a difference- it really does! #justacard or just a mug or just a coffee or just a pair of socks- whatever it is, it’s important to support small businesses if we want them to be there year after year.

I’ll be taking part in the Just A Card INDIE WEEK challenge this year, so you’ll see my posts each day this week according to the following plan on twitter, instagram, and facebook, as well as this blog:

I’d love to hear from you- please share your favourite small independent businesses this week more than ever!
