Snowflakes in Progress

A slab of clay with a linocut plate of the same size, fitting six different snowflake designs on each  slab…

The printing plate on top of the clay, ready to roll through the slab roller…

The plate is peeled off the clay…

And the printed slabs are placed on boards to dry a little bit…

And then each snowflake is cut by hand from the slabs while the clay is still damp.

After this much, I’m out of the picture for a while.  The snowflakes, after drying some more between flat boards to keep them from warping, get the edges smoothed by rubbing a damp sponge over them ever so carefully.  They go in the kiln to be bisque fired (I think that’s the term- Alexis, leave a comment to correct what I get wrong!), then get some of the beautiful crystaline glaze added to the smooth side of the snowflake, get fired again, and they’re ready to go to their new homes!

Here are all six finished snowflake designs.  Each one has a lino cut image from me on one side, and Alexis’ glaze on the other side.  Their prices go by size: $10, $11, $14, $14, $17, and $22 plus tax.  (Alexis’ prices are slightly different as her prices include the tax)

They are available here at Norton’s Cove Studio, and also at Alexis Templeton Studio.

Printing Clay

I’m posting from the fabulous Alexis Templeton Studio tonight in St. John’s, where I’ll be working on small projects with Alexis until Saturday night.  Feel free to drop in to pay us a visit!  I’ll post some working pictures tomorrow…

Update [31.10.11] I forgot to take pictures!  But we got lots of snowflakes printed and ready for the kiln.  With any luck, they’ll be ready for The Christmas Craft Fair which starts next week!  Alexis will have a booth there, and you’ll also be able to get them at her shop on Quidi Vidi Road and my shop here in Brookfield.

We also printed six dogberry plates… we’ll see how/if those turn out soon!

New Printing Plates

Multiple snowflake plate that I’m preparing to create more snowflakes by pressing a linoleum printing matrix into porcelin clay.  Alexis Templeton then makes them into beautiful white snowflakes, with her gorgeous blue crystaline glaze on the plain side.  They will be available for sale at both our studios, and at Alexis’ booth at the Christmas Craft Fair at the Arts & Culture Centre in November.

Here’s a daisy I drew last month, which I’ll be turning into a limited edition lino-cut.  The plan is to print it in black ink, then watercolouring in the green stem and yellow middle.  An edition of 50 maybe?
